Soft Moon
Instrumentation: mezzo-soprano and piano
Duration: 4’30”
Program note:
Soft Moon was written as a response to my early compositional listening interests in tonal, lyrical art music such as that of Henri Gorecki that attempts to augment the passing of time through slow harmonic rhythm, swelling climactic surges, and pensive, meditative moods. The piece explores these concepts with lengthy instrumental interludes, harmonic mode, and structural elasticity. In addition, the piece explores text painting through the use of register and dynamic manipulation. The text and music were written for and are dedicated to Anita Dickerson.
