Resurrection Circus
Instrumentation: clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and electronics
Duration: 17′
Program note:
In composing this work, I was inspired by my readings on the Bread & Puppet Theater troupe based in New England mainly in the 1960’s – 1980’s. The troupe performed their own idiosyncratic forms of activist theater events that culminated in an annual Domestic Resurrection Circus – a sort of parade and pageant of celebration and reflection.
The work is organized using collections of divergent spectra – from air raid sirens to hermit thrush birdsong. The instruments often occupy a sub-collection from a spectrum and articulate these partials with repeating rhythmic filigree that overlap with and converge upon one another.
This work was written for Unheard-of//Ensemble and was premiered on March 13th, 2022 in New Orleans, Louisiana and on March 14th, 2022 in Hammond, Louisiana.
