Putty

Instrumentation: fixed media (stereo)

Duration: 5′

Program note:

Putty was realized in the Taylor Recording Studio at Birmingham-Southern College using SoundForge software for editing and processing. The source material for the piece was derived from a putty knife physically manipulated in the same fashion as that of a diving board with a stationary end and an end suspended over air. The suspended wooden handle of the knife was pulled upwards and released to frantically jolt back to its original state of rest creating metallic ricochet sounds in the process. The piece creates a multi-layered sound field retaining cohesion through the use of percussive and timbral motives.
