Interruptions III

Instrumentation: alto saxophone and fixed media

Duration: 9′ 15″

Program note:

This work was commissioned by Richard Schwartz for the 2011 Region VI North American Saxophone Alliance Conference in Jacksonville, Florida. The third in series of works that explore facets of musical discontinuity, segmentation, and progression, it is a tightly constructed work that uses the overtone series as source code for rhythm, pitch, timbre, and form. The work is divided into tightly wound rhythmic sections juxtaposed with freer sections that explore nuances of timbre. Each of these sections focuses on and develops a different interval of the overtone series. Interruptions III is recorded by saxophonist Richard Schwartz on the Centaur release entitled Embers (CRC 3385), available on streaming services and as a compact disc.
