Interruptions IV

Instrumentation: prepared piano

Duration: 7′

SCORE (EXCERPTS):

Program note:

Written for pianist Beth Dardenne, Interruptions IV is the concluding work in my Interruptions series of works that explore facets of musical discontinuity, segmentation, and progression. The work is written for minimal preparation and performing implements (coins, mounting putty, clothes pins, glass vase) to explore the extended timbral palette of the instrument. Each of the six movements to Interruptions IV is named after a sixteenth-century maritime navigational device.

Movements:

I. Astrolabe
II. Nocturnal (Interlude I)
III. Quadrant
IV. Traverse Board (Interlude II)
V. Dry-Card Compass (Interlude III) – attacca
VI. Sand Glass
