Ghost exemplifies my early predilection to write in a pensively tonal, quasi-modal, and extended harmonic fashion. In a sense, the work demarcates a pivotal stylistic shift away from neo-pop influenced harmonies to a broader, more static approach to vocal composition. Both text and music were written at the same time. The piece was fashioned texturally using the text as a formal (and timbral) guideline. The work explores the suspensions of phrasing and sustained sonorities as an atmospheric device to enhance, without necessarily analogizing, the textual narrative.
